Since 1995, Survey Research Lab has conducted numerous survey projects for a wide variety of clients. Most projects have varied in size, approach, complexity, and content. The following is a sample of some of our more recent clients, including a brief description of their projects.

Multiple Year Studies:

Feedbacks between Urban Systems and the Environment (FUSE) Project:  
The SRL conducted random household telephone surveys in Houston, Texas and Portland, Oregon within 36 hours of a Clean Air Action Day or Ozone Watch Day being declared. For each of five target days, 100-150 surveys were completed. In future waves of data collection, 16 target days will be identified with the goal of achieving 125 completed surveys each. This project is being conducted for a team of researchers lead by faculty at Portland State University. (Summer 2005, Summer 2006, Summer 2007)

Metropolitan Portland Critical Issues Survey: A bi-annual survey of 350 residents was conducted to identify the top ten critical issues facing the Portland metropolitan area according to its citizenry. The PSU SRL has conducted this survey three times for the Institute of Portland Metropolitan Studies. (Fall 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006)

Multnomah County Citizen Survey:  An annual telephone survey of 1,500 randomly selected Multnomah County citizens was conducted to identify satisfaction with current county services. The PSU SRL has conducted the annual survey for the Multnomah County Auditor's Office since 2001. (Spring 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006)

Oregon Health Care Survey: Telephone follow-up surveys were conducted with recipients of the Oregon Health Plan who had not returned the mailed survey in the second and third waves of the Oregon Health Care Survey. The survey was conducted on behalf of the Office of Oregon Health Policy Research, the PSU Department of Sociology, and the Providence Health System's Center for Outcomes Research and Education. (Winter - Spring 2005, Spring 2006)

Single Year Studies:

Multnomah County Family Caregiver Support Program Satisfaction Survey: The SRL provided consultation, survey design support, and conducted over 200 satisfaction surveys for Multnomah County's Aging and Disability Services. The purpose of this study was to obtain feedback from caregivers receiving support from the Family Caregiver Support Program in Multnomah County. (Fall 2007)

Clackamas County Rural Roll-Cart Survey
The SRL contacted over 800 households in Clackamas County who were classified as receiving one of three types of recycling services: monthly roll-cart pick-up, weekly roll-cart pick-up, or weekly curbside bin pick-up. The purpose of this study was to obtain feedback from recycling customers in Clackamas County. (Fall 2007)

Oregon Annual Social Indicators Survey: The SRL conducted a random statewide survey of over 1400 households for the Oregon Criminal Justice Commission. Telephone surveys were conducted to gather Oregonians' feelings about Oregon Police and racial profiling, their experiences with police stops, searches, and arrests, voluntary police contacts, their driving habits, and key demographic and household information. (Fall 2007)

Portland Police Bureau Community Assessment Survey: The SRL conducted a random household survey of over 1400 City of Portland residents. The purpose of the survey was to evaluate the community's perception of the work performed by the Portland Police Bureau, measure concerns regarding neighborhood crime and the community's level of involvement in public safety solutions. (Summer 2007)

Multnomah County Disability Services Satisfaction Survey: The SRL provided consultation on survey design and conducted 375 telephone surveys with Aging and Disability Service recipients. This survey was part of a collaborative effort by the ADS Administration and the Disability Services Advisory Council to evaluate the Department's current performance in carrying out its mission as a service provider. (Spring 2007)

Metro Multi-Family Survey: The SRL conducted a household survey of over 300 Multnomah, Clackamas and Washington County residents who reside in multi-family complexes with five or more units.This survey focused on how households in multi-family complexes manage their recycling so that recycling programs could be better designed. The survey was conducted in partnership with Community Environmental Services at PSU for the Metro Regional Government. (Spring 2007)

Metro Recycle at Work Survey: The SRL contacted over 700 Portland Metro businesses to learn about their companies' paper recycling practices. The purpose of this survey was to understand how businesses are managing their recyclables so that programs can be better designed. The survey was conducted on behalf of Metro's Recycle at Work program. (Spring 2007)

Oregon University System Bachelor's Degree Recipients - Follow-Up Survey: Telephone surveys were conducted as a follow-up to collect data on annual personal income for the State Board of Higher Education's 2005 Bachelor's Degree Recipient Survey. The brief survey was completed with 539 graduates across the seven Oregon Universities. The survey was conducted on behalf of the Chancellor's Office of the Oregon University System. (Fall - Winter 2006)

Metro Curbside Recycling Survey: The SRL contacted over 300 Portland residents in the Metropolitan region to assess the effectiveness of a campaign targeting changes in curbside recycling. The purpose of the survey was to identify whether the advertising campaign significantly impacted Metropolitan curbside recycling practices. The survey was conducted in partnership with Community Environmental Services at PSU for the Metro Regional Government. (Fall 2006)

Oregon Family Panel Survey: The SRL contacted 180 Oregon residents and asked questions about providing care for individuals with medical, behavioral, or other long-term health conditions that require assistance. This study served as a pilot study to assist in the development of a longitudinal panel design for the Center for Family Care in Oregon (CFCO), a collaborative of researchers from OSU, OHSU, PSU, and Kaiser. (Fall 2006)

visionPDX Project: The SRL provided consultation on survey design and methodology, data analysis, and qualitative data coding for Mayor Tom Potter's visionPDX project. Over 13,000 individuals took part by completing surveys or participating in community focus groups to share their vision for the future of Portland. Specially trained SRL team members managed the incoming surveys and conducted qualitative data coding. The SRL provided the visionPDX team with manageable compiled reports of survey responses organized by topic, as well as data analysis reports. (Summer and Fall 2006)

Training Pipeline Survey: The SRL conducted a survey by mail of over 100 training and education providers in the Portland/Vancouver metro area to collect data on programs, costs, graduation rates, and hire rates. The survey was conducted for Work Systems, Inc. in order to create a directory for prospective students and employers, and to guide them in their career counseling services. The survey was followed up with phone calls to non-respondents, as well as a secondary phone survey of apprenticeship providers in Oregon and Washington. (Summer 2006)

Metro Business Waste Prevention Market Assessment Survey: The SRL contacted over 500 businesses in the Metropolitan region to assess their shipping and packaging practices. The purpose of the survey was to identify waste prevention opportunities for shipping and packaging waste. The survey was conducted in partnership with Community Environmental Services at PSU for the Metro Regional Government. (Summer 2006)

Resuscitations Outcomes Consortium Survey: The SRL conducted a random household survey of Multnomah, Washington, Clackamas, and Clark counties residents to find out respondents' opinions about a medical study involving people who have been severely injured. The purpose was to guide the investigators at OHSU on the most effective ways to distribute information about the study in the community. (Spring - Summer 2006)

Lake Oswego 50+ Needs Assessment: The SRL provided research expertise in survey preparation and validation, data entry and analysis. In addition, the SRL assisted in developing the format for data collection, trained facilitators, coded and analyzed qualitative data in partnership with Lincoln Crow Strategic Communications. The project was done for the City of Lake Oswego, who wanted to assess the needs of Lake Oswego residents age 50 and over to develop a vision of positive aging. (Spring 2006)

Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment (POLST) Study: Nursing facilities in Oregon, Wisconsin, and West Virginia were surveyed by telephone to assess advance planning practices and use of the POLST program. The survey is a part of a larger study to determine the effectiveness of progressive directive programs in comparison to traditional advance care planning.The telephone survey was conducted for the School of Nursing at Oregon Health & Science University. (Winter 2006)

California Natural Gas Price Shock Survey: The SRL conducted a survey of randomly selected natural gas customers in California to learn how the large natural gas price increases of winter 2005-2006 affected them.The project was conducted for the California Institute for Energy and Environment. (Winter 2006)

Joint Disability Task Force Survey: The SRL provided consultation, data entry, and data analysis of an Oregon State Courts user survey for the Task Force on Access to State Courts for Persons with Disabilities. In addition, the SRL assisted with the facilitation of focus groups of people with disabilities. (Spring 2005-Winter 2006)

Employer Measures of Productivity, Absence, and Quality (EMPAQ) Customer Satisfaction Survey Development: The SRL created a customizable paper satisfaction survey that would be used by various businesses to assess its employee's satisfaction with the Short Term Disability Benefit program. The development of the survey was done for Health and Disability Management Solution Inc. (Fall 2005)

Oregon Courts Survey: A comprehensive telephone survey of 151 Oregon courts about electronic communications from Oregon Courts to the ODOT Driver & Motor Vehicle. The survey was conducted for an investigator in PSU's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. (Fall 2005)

Portland Transportation and Bicycling Survey: A random household survey of 566 residents in the Portland Oregon Metro Area was conducted by telephone to a study of how people get around in neighborhoods, including bicycling. The survey was conducted for PSU's School of Urban Studies and Planning. (Fall 2005)

Oregon Population Survey - African American Over sampling: SRL conducted a random telephone survey with 420 Oregon residents who identified their household as having at least one African American member. The survey was conducted on behalf of the Office of Oregon Health Policy and Research to validate their previous findings and oversample African American households for their biannual population survey. (Fall 2005)

Portland Park User Survey: SRL conducted a random survey of Portland park users to better understand why people use the parks and how they might be improved. The survey was conducted for Portland Parks and Recreation. (Fall 2005)

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: PSU Survey Research Lab (SRL) assisted with the development of and conducted a focus group with graduating seniors in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE). The purpose of the focus group was to garner additional information for the continuous improvement process in their programs, as part of their periodic departmental analysis. (Spring 2005)

Oregon Law Center: SRL transcribed tapes from focus groups of indigenous farm workers conducted by the Oregon Law Center. A total of six focus group transcripts were completed, four of which were in Spanish. (Spring 2005)

Pediatric Injury Prevention Survey: Telephone surveys were conducted with 110 randomly selected households in Aloha and Portland, Oregon to assess the types of injuries experienced by children in those areas, as well as the efforts families take to prevent childhood injuries. The surveys were conducted on behalf of the Oregon Health & Science Department of Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics. (Winter 2005)

Portland Major League Baseball Survey: Randomly selected households in the Portland Oregon Metro Area were surveyed by telephone to gather their opinions about the value of bringing a major league baseball team to Portland Oregon. The survey was conducted for a doctoral student in PSU's College of Urban and Public Affairs. (Winter 2005)

Emergency Room Directors Survey: Telephone surveys were conducted with 50 Emergency Room Directors throughout Oregon on behalf of the Oregon Health & Science University's Department of Emergency Medicine. (Fall 2004 - Winter 2005)

Gender & Transition and Helping All Latinas Achieve: Paper surveys were mailed to a regional sample for two projects focusing on gender and cultural issues related to special education transition planning. The PSU SRL completed the data entry for the Regional Research Institute for Human Services investigators at Portland State University. (Winter 2005)

National Youth Leadership Network: Telephone and web surveys were conducted with members of the National Youth Leadership Network (NYLN), a group with a mission of promoting leadership development by youth with disabilities. The members each nominated another youth with a disability who is not a leader and a youth without a disability who is a leader to participate in the survey. The survey was conducted for the NYLN Research Committee, in collaboration with the Oregon Health & Science University's Center on Self-Determination. (Spring 2004 - Spring 2005)

Survey of Stress, Coping, and Drinking Behavior: A telephone survey of 500 randomly selected Portland Metropolitan Area residents was conducted to better understand the motivation to drink alcohol to relieve and/or better cope with stress. The survey was conducted for a team of investigators in the PSU Psychology Department. (Summer 2004)

Breast Cancer Survey: A telephone survey of 50 women who had been diagnosed with breast cancer was conducted to determine the way in which their cancer was diagnosed. This survey was conducted for investigators with Oregon Health & Science University's Department of Family Medicine. (Spring - Summer 2004)

Gorge Telecommunications Survey: A telephone survey of 100 residents in four Columbia Gorge counties in Washington and Oregon was conducted regarding their use of telecommunications technology and need for additional training used as a component to facilitate economic growth in those areas. The survey was conducted for the Mid-Columbia Economic Development District. (Spring 2004)

PSU Alumni Association: A telephone survey of 1,500 members of the PSU Alumni Association gathered information to inform the Alumni Association's strategic planning process. A random sample of members was stratified across six decades of graduates. (Winter - Spring 2004)

Oregon Health Care Survey:  Telephone follow-up surveys were conducted with recipients of the Oregon Health Plan who had not returned the mailed survey in the second and third waves of the Oregon Health Care Survey.  For the first wave of data collection, the SRL made telephone reminder calls to 3,100 recipients of the mailed survey.  The survey was conducted on behalf of the Office of Oregon Health Policy Research, the PSU Department of Sociology, and the Providence Health System's Center for Outcomes Research and Education.  (Winter 2004, Spring 2005, Spring 2006)

Men's Personal Assistance Services Abuse Project: A telephone survey of 342 men with disabilities was conducted for the Oregon Health & Science University's Center on Self-Determination. Respondents in three states (Oregon, Washington and California) were surveyed to increase the identification, assessment and response to abuse by formal and informal personal assistance service providers of men with physical and/or cognitive disabilities. (Summer 2003-Winter 2004)

Carson Income Survey:  A telephone survey of 315 residents of unincorporated Carson Washington was conducted to determine their household income in order for the Skamania County PUD to request federal Community Development Block Grant funds.  (Fall 2003)

Asian and Pacific Islanders Community Health Association: A telephone survey of 300 members of the Asian and Pacific Islanders communities in the Portland metropolitan area assessed the health behaviors of four different Asian groups. The survey was conducted for the Asian Family Center, a program of IRCO (Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization). (Summer - Winter 2002)
